distance: a bit further
Apprehensive might describe the mood of the party as we headed out of Keswick, just waiting for the next mechanical
disaster to strike.
But disaster didn't strike. We ambled through the Lake District and on to Penrith without mishap.
not having a mishap
Getting out of Penrith involved the steepest hill of the trip so far, though nothing compared to what we knew was to come later that day.
So we set our sights on Langwathby and lunch.
The pub in Langwathby does reasonably good cheapish food. Some of us had our second cumberland sausage of the day.
After lunch we started off for Hartside and England's highest cafe. The climb up was a bit like the pre-lunch climb out of Penrith. Only longer. Much, much longer. We'd assumed that this would be the worst part of the trip, so reckoned that crawling into the cafe was a major milestone.
Hartside
We left the cafe and covered the five miles downhill into Alston in about 10 minutes. (Possibly a waste, this is where the proper scenery starts.) Having found a bed and breakfast we set out in search of beer and Cumberland Sausage.
